You may ask, where can I find such a fun sounding place? Let me tell you, head on over to Harajuku and have a meal at the Kawaii Monster Cafe! As soon as we walked to the front door of the cafe it was already so colorful and fun! They had lots of food and drink options while also keeping you entertained with quirky decor and monster girls!
- Lunch- 11:30-16:30
- Dinner- 18:00-22:30
Food and drink prices can be found on their website. There is a 500 yen zone charge per person when you are a smaller party sitting at a larger table.
YM square building 4F, 4-31-10, Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo
- One minute walk from exit 5 of the Subway Chiyoda Line Meiji Jingu-mae station
- Five minute walk from the Omotesando exit of JR Harajuku station
Just type the address of the cafe into google maps once you are at one of these stations. It will take you right to the front of the YM square building. Take the stairs or escalator up to the 4th floor, you can’t miss the giant purple walls and googly monster eyeballs!
The cafe accepts walk-ins and when we arrived there was a line but we didn’t have to wait long to get in. As we headed up to the doors we walked down the tongue and then inside the belly of a monster named Mr. Ten Thousand Chopsticks or Choppy for short. Once inside the belly of the monster there’s a big cake shaped merry-go round, don’t try to ride it or you will be kicked out!
It depends on how busy they are but you can pick which room you want to sit in! There are four rooms total, “Mushroom Disco,” “Milk Stand,” “Bar Experiment,” and “Mel-Tea Room.” We had picked the Mel-Tea room and I was not disappointed! Anyone who knows me, knows that I love anything girly, funky and colorful! The whole place was just that!
My experience so far with these funky themed cafes has always been fun but they usually have a small menu. However, the Kawaii Monster cafe has a lot of choices! Every item on the menu was colorful and exciting! While also being exciting, the food was really delicious and the portions were a good size!
We had decided to do a family style meal and share everything so we all could try more then our own food! By the time desert had come I was already stuffed!
The cafe does have a few rules for the guests to follow. One is that they ask that customers don’t walk around once seated. I wanted to follow the rules so I didn’t get too many more pictures of the rest of the cafe. I guess if you want to see more you’ll just have to check it out for yourself or wait till I go back and take more pictures!
As you sit and eat there are Monster Girls that will walk around and visit you! Their outfits and makeup are so quirky and lively! I would love to be a monster girl and dress crazy for work!
After we were done eating and paid our bill I had to go find the bathroom! I always try and remember to check out the bathroom in these places because they are always just as fun looking as the rest of the cafe!
We had got a little turned around when we were trying to find our way out. A waitress had to show us where to go! The cafe also has a little store to buy fun souvenirs on your way out! We also got to meet up with a small version of Mr. Choppy.
If you don’t want to make the trip to Harajuku just for the Kawaii Monster Cafe there is lots of shopping to do all around the area! You can also head over to the Meiji Shrine which is right next to the train station! If you would like more information on the Meiji Shrine check out my previous blog post about it!
The Kawaii Monster Cafe was so much fun and I’m so glad we took the time to go! I will be going back to check out the other rooms! Themed restaurants and cafes are quickly becoming one of my favorite places to visit here in Japan! Stay tuned for more of my neat adventures!
